Charles "Shang" Wheeler Vignette

Charles Edward Wheeler(1872-1949)

He was known to everyone as "Shang".  Shang was Connecticut's most famous decoy maker and had great influence in stimulating nationwide interest in decoy carving and collecting.  He started as a market gunner and many of his decoys were made solely for that purpose, but he also enjoyed drawing, painting, and carving.  It was the combination of his sporting and artistic interests that led him to produce his outstanding carvings of waterfowl, other birds, and fish.
