Drake Canvasback Decoy

Carved By Bert Graves - Peoria, IL (1887-1957)

&

Gus Moak - Tustin, WI (1852-1942)

This Drake Canvasback is the ultimate in American Folkart decoy carving.  It's gracious head in classic Moak style combined with Grave's sleekly carved body and Mrs. Graves paint makes this an outstanding Folkart example. It retains the original Grave's weight and the Peacock stamp.

In the 1930's Graves received an order for 400 Canvasback decoys from Walter Peacock, heir to the famous Chicago Jewelry company. (See stamp on the bottom of the decoy.) Gus Moak helped Bert Graves meet the deadline by making the heads for some of the decoys and Bert made the bodies.  Bert's sister-in-law Millie painted all of the decoys. This bird retains it's original paint. These decoys were used at the Peacock Lodge at Portage La Prairie in Manitoba.
